We’d like to say a big kiwi “Good On Ya” to our good friends at Project Kiwi!
We’ve been helping them out along with a number of locals, by sitting on the hills in the dark and listening out for kiwi calls for their annual Kiwi Call Survey in the Coromandel area. The data is collated and assessed to determine what it means, and the implications for future practice to ensure the kiwi population in the Coromandel thrives.
Some of the great results for the Kiwi Call Survey 2020 included:
• One male kiwi recorded in the Waitaia Loop Track – the first time kiwi has have bene present in the area for years
• 10 kiwi calls on the second night at a site in the Rings Beach Reserve
• 17 kiwi calls on the second night at the stone kiwi site
It’s so great to be a part of Project Kiwi and to see the support of so many locals doing good to help our kiwi populations thrive.
